Dutch Horeca in 2024: A Year of Contrasts

As we wrap up 2024, it’s time to reflect on how the Horeca market has evolved over the past year in the Netherlands. It is clear that 2024 has been a year of contrasts for the Dutch Horeca market. Using our Location Database, we have monitored the number of active outlets in the Netherlands to analyze how this market has evolved over time.

After a challenging start of the year, marked by a decline of around 1% between January and April 2024, the market began to recover in May, achieving an increase of 0.8% from January to October. Still, developments vary by segment:

• Eat segment (such as restaurants): a growth of 1,7%

• Sleep segment (such as hotels): a slight increase of 0,3%

• Drink segment (such as bars): a decline of 1,2%

🏆 Thriving segments

Within the Eat locations, the Fast food segment has been one of the top performers this year, recording a total growth of 3% between January and October. A closer look reveals that all subsegments within the fast food segment (shoarma/kebab, snacks & frites and others), have experienced growth, with shoarma/kebab locations leading the way with an increase of 4.5%.

In the Sleep segment, Hotels/Hostels have also showed encouraging numbers, with nearly a 1% increase since the start of the year. This growth has been driven primarily by hostels, which saw an impressive 8.5% rise in the number of establishments.

📉 Segments facing challenges

As noted before, the Drink segment faced challenges this year, especially the Nightclubs within this segment saw a significant decline, dropping from 320 to 296 establishments between January and October—a decrease of 7.5%. The Bars and Cafés also experienced a decrease of 1.3%. The Coffee Bars however were the only one to record an increase (+0.8%) within this segment.
