Alcohol-Free Beer in Dutch Out-of-Home: Four Insights

Roamler cover graphic: availability of the main lager brand compared to its alcohol-free version across Dutch on-trade outlets

Alcohol-free beer has moved from novelty to fixture in the Dutch market. Sales have risen by almost 500% since 2010, and roughly one beer in fifteen consumed in the Netherlands is now alcohol-free. (Source: Nederlandse Brouwers)

The range has more than doubled in five years, which makes the 0.0 variants difficult for a consumer to miss. We looked at what that actually means for availability on the ground — across food, drink, sports, convenience, accommodation and events venues.

1. Brand Availability

57% of outlets in these segments stock an alcohol-free beer, against 68% for alcoholic lager. The gap is narrower than most brand teams assume, and the number of different 0.0 variants served per outlet keeps rising.

Heineken and Amstel lead on distribution of their alcohol-free lines. The more striking finding concerns Amstel and Bavaria: both reach more outlets with their alcohol-free beer than with their alcoholic lager. Hertog Jan 0.0 sits below its parent brand, and Grolsch is level.

2. Regional Differences

Availability varies by province. Zeeland has the broadest coverage in proportional terms, while Flevoland trails the rest of the country.

3. Differences by Venue Type

Venue type matters more than region. Takeaway, delivery and fast-food outlets remain low on alcohol-free availability.

Sports canteens have moved the other way and now sit at a high level, in line with the objectives of the Dutch National Prevention Agreement — the public health accord that includes targets on alcohol consumption. Even there, though, alcohol-free has not yet caught up with alcoholic beer.

4. Packaging

Across the out-of-home channel as a whole, formats break down as follows. Outlets frequently serve more than one, so the figures do not total 100%.

FormatOutlets serving it
Draught67%
BottlesAlmost 40%
Cans20%

Cans concentrate in fast food, though canned craft beer is increasingly common in pubs. Bottles are the fastest-growing format in the on-trade, and among the outlets that serve bottled beer, 40% now carry ten or more variants. Alcohol-free beer is most often served bottled.
